Traveling to Costa Rica During the Pandemic

Itching to get back on your board this winter? As Guanacaste Province’s desirable dry season approaches, the country is opening its borders to all US citizens and residents. Starting November 1st, Americans along with citizens and residents of Canada, the EU and the UK will be able to enter the country via commercial flights from any destination. This even applies to flights with layovers at unauthorized locations (as long as passengers don’t leave the airport.) Also, unlike prior restrictions, a negative COVID-19 test is no longer required. What’s the catch? There is no catch. You just need to be prepared with a couple of things to ensure your admission is smooth.

Here’s what you need to know:

Within 48 hours of your flight, complete the required Health Pass form online (you’re unable to submit prior). The form will require you to upload one of the following:

  • Proof of international insurance to cover COVID-19 related medical treatment while in Costa Rica, that covers at least:
    • $50,000 (USD) in medical expenses
    • $2,000 (USD) in quarantine lodging
  • Another, potentially easier option, is to purchase Costa Rican insurance through one of the following providers:

Upon entry into the country, be prepared to:

  • Bring your Health Pass confirmation QR code on your phone or a printed copy
  • Wear a mask
  • Comply with social distancing requirements
  • Follow any other sanitary instructions
  • Have your temperature checked

It’s as simple as that. The consistent waves and optimal weather of Tamarindo, Playa Grande, Playa Avellanas and Playa Nosara await!
