The Do’s and Don’ts of Surf Lessons During the Pandemic

Costa Rica is open for business and that means our beautiful beaches are once again open to American tourists seeking some of the best waves in North America. If you’re considering surf lessons in our hot spot, we’re offering the following suggestions for what to do and what not to do during COVID-19 times.

DO practice social distancing in and out of the water

On the beach and in the water, keep a safe distance of 6 feet or more apart whenever possible. Also, forget the hugs and handshakes and say hello with a shaka!

DON’T share supplies or equipment

BYOS (bring your own surfboard) whenever possible and if renting, make sure the company you rent from is cleaning and sanitizing their boards between each use. Don’t forget to bring your own wax, sunblock and anything else you think you might need. Always carry travel-sized hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes and/or spray too.

DO wear a mask to the beach

Beaches are often crowded places and while you may be on vacation, the pandemic certainly isn’t taking time off! Wear a mask whenever appropriate.

DON’T be afraid to talk to your instructor about COVID-19 safety in advance

Masks are only effective if both instructor and student wear them. If you are a beginner and think you might require hands-on help while in the water, don’t hesitate to wear a mask and ask your instructor to do so as well.

DO regularly assess how you’re feeling

If you’re experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms before your departure, postpone your trip. Consider purchasing insurance from the airline you’re flying with so the decision doesn’t have to be a financial one. If you’re not feeling well during your trip, quarantine at your hotel.

If you’ve ever been to Costa Rica before, it will be no surprise to you that tourism is our fastest growing industry and is responsible for much of our country’s income. Many Ticos (short for Costa Ricans), work in the tourism industry and are relying on your responsible conduct to stay financially afloat. Our family at Surf Break Costa Rica thanks you in advance for considering the above guidance thoughtfully before your next vacation to our beautiful home. Pura vida!
